Description:
Listening To Trees is a series of collected projects created with the goal of connecting viewers to trees and nature – both around them and around the world. In our local communities and worldwide, trees play a pivotal role in the health of the people and ecosystems they live in, but their importance is often easily overlooked. Rapid urbanization and deforestation across the world leave little room for trees, and because of this people and ecosystems struggle to keep up with the effects of climate change that trees are known to mitigate – such as increased air pollution, flooding, and extreme heat. Trees can also be a strong indicator of inequality, especially in urban environments – neighborhoods and communities that have been historically divested and disenfranchised often have a lack of trees, which makes them especially vulnerable to the negative effects of climate change. Through the tools created in this project, I hope to give viewers the space to really take time and listen to the trees and green spaces around them, and reflect on what the presence or absence of trees in their communities has to say about what – and who – we value, protect, and care for most.
